St. Mary’s of Michigan Support for Living Cancer Support Group

Support for Living was founded in 1989 by our facilitator, Cheryl A. Fairbrother, RN, BSN, MHA, PhD, OCN, for all people.  Anyone facing or living with a cancer diagnosis, in remission, or a loved one living with someone with cancer.  It is open to the public free of charge and welcomes all.
 
Support for Living Group currently meets monthly, with a plan to meet bi-monthly, for cancer support is not a monthly event.
 
Location:  St. Mary’s of Michigan Seton Cove on Washington Ave.
Date:  Second Thursday of every month
Time:  6-7PM
Refreshments/Snacks provided free of charge

Speakers on nutrition, physical rehab, sexuality, how to go forward, etc. Call for times and dates

Annual Cancer Symposia
Each year St. Mary's of Michigan Seton Cancer Institute hosts a cancer symposium with an internationally recognized lecturer to discuss current issues in cancer treatment. Call (989) 907-8115 for more information.

Survivor's Day
A special celebration with speakers, food, and music is held each year at each of the St. Mary's of Michigan Seton Cancer Institute locations. Patients inspire us and remind us of the great history of cancer care at St. Mary's of Michigan. Upcoming days include:
 Marlette-- Sunday, August 20 -- noon - 2 p.m. West Branch -- September TBD

Support Services

Transportation
St. Mary's of Michigan Seton Cancer Institute can arrange to transport patients if necessary.
Pastoral care
Chaplains and others provide spiritual and emotional support, comfort, and guidance to patients and families.   Nutritional counseling
Dieticians and other experts can assist patients with ideas for meal selection, during and following treatment, and provide consultation on nutritional supplements, if appropriate.
Rehabilitation
Experts will help patients with pain, swelling, mobility issues, wound care, colostomy care, and special skin care needs.
Education
Experts will help patients and families learn about cancer, treatment options and their ramifications, recovery, and more.
Library services
The St. Mary's of Michigan library can provide technical and practical information from a large array of print and online resources. Our Patient Education Resource Room is also open to patients.
Support groups
Various groups are available to help patients and their loved ones face the physical and emotional challenges of cancer . Social work
Experts can assist patients and families with insurance, financial, and home care issues. They are knowledgeable about government and community-based agencies and can make referrals.
Cancer registry
A means of recording data that enable us to evaluate the results of our diagnostic and therapeutic efforts and continuously improve the care of cancer patients.
