St. Mary's of Michigan ER Books
Encouraging Reading by Offering Opportunities to Kids Who are Sick

Mission
Provide a new or gently used hardcover book to all children 10 years old and under who visit the Emergency Department.

Goal
Begin the program locally and develop a sustainable model. Offer the program statewide and then nationally with the ultimate goal of being present in every Emergency Department in the country.

Benefits
As our country struggles with literacy, ER BOOKS is a great way to say "I care" to your community and make a tangible difference. In addition, it helps make emergency rooms friendlier and less intimidating for kids. The children receiving the books are thrilled. This is especially true for some of the kids who have never received a book of their own. Lastly, it’s a nice way for the entire Emergency Department staff to work together for our younger and more vulnerable patients.

History
ER BOOKS was started in the St. Mary's of Michigan Emergency Department in 2004. A grant was obtained from Citizens Bank to defray the initial start-up costs. Several doctors from Timberline Emergency Physicians, St. Mary's of Michigan Foundation, St. Mary's of Michigan Children's Free Ward Association and the Saginaw Township Soccer Association were instrumental in gathering the manpower as well as the financial resources to start the program. In 2006, the program was also implemented at St. Mary's of Michigan Standish hospital.

Today, nearly 100,000 books have been given out to children during their ER visits at St. Mary's of Michigan.
