First Robotic Colorectal Surgery Performed

Wael Solh, MD, FACS, FASCRS of Midwestern Surgical Associates has performed the first robotic colorectal surgeries in mid-Michigan and Lansing.

"Colorectal surgeries are some of the most difficult procedures to do in a minimally invasive fashion, which is why we arealways striving to be on the forefront of new emerging technologies to assist us in these procedures,” said Dr. Solh. "Robotic assisted surgery provides surgeons with a higher level of visualization, dexterity and, therefore, accuracy and safety.”

According to Dr. Solh, robotic surgical equipment is currently best suited for operating on one particular location of the body, making it ideal for colon surgery. Typically, colon surgery focuses on either the left or right side of the colon or part of therectum inside the pelvis.

Robotic colorectal surgery can help treat colon polyps, cancer and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis).

By using the daVinci system for minimally invasive procedures, patients can experience less blood loss and a quicker recovery.

"It’s very unusual to be able to leave the hospital so quickly after a major surgery, such as a colon or rectal resection. Therobotic technology is certainly helping patients recover faster and get back to their lives.”

St. Mary’s of Michigan has the most advanced daVinci robotic surgical system, which is used in a number of different surgeriesin the areas of gynecology, bariatrics, urology and general surgery.

St. Mary’s of Michigan is only one of three hospitals in the state to perform robotic colorectal surgeries.
