Quality & Patient Safety
Putting Patients First
According to patients nationwide, the top three things they want and expect upon entering a healthcare facility are to be:
- Safe
- Healed
- Treated nicely
...in that order. St. Mary's of Michigan is committed to delivering the right care at the right time in the right setting, providing the highest possible patient safety and quality care for every patient, each and every day. In fact, safety is the cornerstone of a St Mary's experience.
As a member of Ascension Health, the nation’s largest, non-profit Catholic health system, St. Mary's of Michigan shares in the mission and promise to provide high quality, compassionate care to all. We are called to provide:
- Healthcare that is safe
- Healthcare that works
- Healthcare that leaves no one behind
Quality and patient safety are terms that can be used interchangeably. Because we cannot improve what we cannot measure, St. Mary's of Michigan has created specific quality and patient safety initiatives around seven measurable areas, referred to as the Significant Seven:
- Medication management
- Pain management
- Reducing/eliminating injuries from falls and immobility
- Reducing/eliminating ventilator-associated pneumonia
- Reducing/eliminating post-surgical blood clots
- Safe and effective discharge and patient education to ensure the patient follows up with their physician after hospital discharge
- Staff and physician training in error-prevention techniques to increase safety and prevent errors
Patient safety is a true teamwork initiative and everyone in the health system is accountable -- from physicians and nurses to ancillary clinicians and support service staff, we are all committed and dedicated to support our healing missions and we are driven by compassion and dedication to provide high quality, safe care for every person.
