CyberKnife
CyberKnife is a radiosurgery instrument that provides
surgery-like results without surgery. There is no pain, no incisions, no blood
loss, no anesthesia and little or no recovery time. The tumor-fighting power
comes from up to 1,200 beams of radiation that target the tumor while sparing
healthy surrounding tissue. The range of motion offered by the robotic arm
gives it maximum flexibility to reach tumor sites not accessible by other
means.
Best
of all, CyberKnife continuously checks and compensates for any movement a
patient makes during treatment – even adjusting as patients breathe – ensuring
superior accuracy. Because of its accuracy, CyberKnife can use higher doses of
radiation to attack tumors and is extremely useful for lung cancer in
particular.
St. Mary’s of Michigan is the only hospital
north of the Detroit area to offer CyberKnife and patients from around the
country and into Canada seek us out for this treatment technology.
